Best Coast's album Crazy for You has a distinct, pop/surf sound that makes you want to lay on a beach with over sized sunglasses. It has a smooth but upbeat sound throughout and is all kinds of enjoyable. Let's move through the song list shall we?
Starting with "Boyfriend", we get a glimpse into pretty much every girl's psyche. The boy you desperately want doesn't see you as anything but a friend. Always comparing to other but with the tinge of hope lingering with every touch. It can easily take you to a sunny afternoon laying on your bed thinking of that high school crush we've all had. Fantastic drum work and catchy lyrics are sure to get this song stuck in your head from first listen.
The album continues to "Crazy for You", an unapologetic almost love song. As the title states the song is about a girl crazy for her baby. It's poppy and easy to sway along with.
The song "The End" pulls on the heartstrings with catchy guitar beats and endearing lyrics. A relationship we've all been in, wanting something to last knowing it will fall apart.
"Goodbye" is lyrically depressing but conceals itself with uplifting and catchy beats. You can feel the songwriters' frustration in a life that's going every way but theirs.
"Summer Mood" carries along the same general theme. Longing for love you can't have, poppy feel good tunes, and spending time with a relationship you know won't blossom.
"Our Deal" reflects on the moments where you missed the opportunity to speak and knowing you'll never know, because you'll never ask. It's an unspoken agreement between the singer and lover. A love that doesn't need to be proclaimed to be understood.
"I Want To" is about capturing that first spark, moment, and love. It starts out slow and builds to a fast paced, shake your ass rhythm that makes you want to shake your worries away and move to the beach.
"When The Sun Don't Shine" Smooth melodies and lyrics like a simple love note make this song an easy listener.
"Bratty B" starts off sounding like a demanding whining ex who won't leave you alone, but then transforms into a girl who's simply trying to make up for her mistakes.
"Honey" the longest track on the album, has hauntingly delicious guitar work. The drums come in to complete the sound, evoking extreme relaxation. A sugary sweet lover so good, it's addicting.
"Happy" starts out with a fast paced groove that makes you really want to dance around and belt out the lyrics along with the songstress. So long as you're happy at the end of the day it's ok to wake up cranky.
"Each and Every Day" fits the theme of the album referring to a lover who's heart seems unattainable. Starting out fast paced and upbeat, transitioning to a slower sing song sort of trance makes this song a surprise first listen but sure to be repeated.
"Bonus Track: When I'm With You" offers intriguing vocals and up tempo beats sure to inspire some top down fun. It seems like a good closure to an album so absorbed in love, finally resolving to just have fun.
Overall I enjoyed listening to the album, but cannot say it's among my favorites. The album is upbeat and makes me want to take a holiday and enjoy love's carefree moments. All the songs are very similar with the occasional surprise. That's not to imply that the songs are bad in themselves, just easy to meld in with the next track. I was surprised and disappointed that the majority of the tracks seem to be just over two minutes. It leaves a listener wanting more. Kudos to the band for that marketing strategy. Will I keep it in rotation? I can assure you it has a spot on the iPod. Check out Best Coast yourselves.
